North Carolina Child Support Guidelines
The purpose of child support is to ensure that, no matter the relationship of their parents, a child’s reasonable needs are met. In North Carolina, the amount of child support to be paid by one party to the other is typically determined by a set of guidelines provided by the state of North Carolina. The calculated amount is presumed to meet the reasonable needs of the children while also taking into account the relative ability of each parent to provide support for the child’s benefit.
The courts in North Carolina use “worksheets” to determine the amount of support a party is presumed to need for the child’s benefit. There are three different worksheets—A, B, and C—and each worksheet is used in different scenarios. Generally speaking, Worksheets A and B are used in most cases.
After the correct worksheet is selected, there are then several factors plugged into the worksheet to ascertain the child support obligation.
They are as follows:
- Gross monthly income
- Pre-existing support obligations and responsibility for other children
- Work-related child care costs
- Health insurance and health care costs
- Extraordinary expenses

How Our Firm Helps Clients
Despite there being clear factors when calculating support, an inaccurate or flat-out incorrect calculation of any one of these factors can result in an incorrect support obligation. Considering it can be difficult to modify a child support obligation once it is calculated, having a meticulous and competent child support attorney is crucial.
